VR Headset Review: Pimax Crystal Light vs. Bigscreen Beyond vs. Meta Quest III
We tried VR for the first time with our racing sim setup, and the experience was nothing short of mind-blowing. The immersive realism and sense of depth were so incredible that we had to say goodbye to our triple ultrawide monitor setup. There was simply no going back. Once you’ve experienced the world of VR in sim racing, everything else feels flat.
Recently, we’ve had the chance to test Pimax’s latest VR offering: the Pimax Crystal Light.
Spoiler: it’s impressive, but there’s a lot to unpack, especially when comparing it to other headsets like the Bigscreen Beyond and the Meta Quest III.
First Impressions and Build Quality
The Pimax Crystal Light is a beast of a headset—both literally and figuratively. When placed next to the Bigscreen Beyond, the size difference is jaw-dropping. The Crystal Light weighs in at over 800 grams, while the Beyond weighs only 127 grams. That’s more than six times the weight! However, weight isn’t always a dealbreaker, particularly for sim racing where you’re seated. If you were standing or moving around a lot (think VR gaming), the bulk would be an issue. But sitting in a rig, focused on racing, it’s manageable.
The larger size of the Crystal Light does come with perks, though. One major upgrade is the Field of View (FoV)—a wide 130°, compared to the 102° FoV on the Bigscreen Beyond. For sim racing, this larger FoV means you can see more of the cabin in your peripheral vision, adding to the immersion. However, I didn’t notice a huge difference between the two in practice. The Bigscreen Beyond also holds up well in this department, with FoV slightly less than the Quest III.
Lenses and Sweet Spot
Where the Pimax Crystal Light really shines is in the optical sweet spot. The lenses are significantly larger than the Bigscreen Beyond’s, which means a larger portion of your view is in perfect focus. The Beyond, on the other hand, has much smaller lenses, and the sweet spot is very small. This difference is crucial in sim racing, where having clarity across a wide field of vision helps you stay aware of your surroundings without needing to move your head as much.
Although the Pimax lenses are fantastic, the Quest III edges out the competition here with its incredibly sharp optics. The Quest III has a sweet spot that seems to defy logic, making it the best in this area among the three headsets.
Visual Quality: OLED vs. LCD
One of the key features that sets these headsets apart is the type of display each one uses. The Bigscreen Beyond uses micro-OLED displays, which deliver deep blacks and vibrant colors, perfect for sim racing scenes with dynamic lighting like sunrise or sunset. The Pimax Crystal Light, while not using OLED, still delivers a visually striking experience with a 6K resolution at 120Hz. It’s no OLED, but it gets impressively close. The sunlit environments in my sim racing games looked bright and vivid, and the overall visual quality felt incredibly immersive.
On the other hand, the Meta Quest III’s display is solid but doesn’t quite match the brightness or contrast of the other two. However, for casual users or those who prioritize versatility over high-end visuals, it’s still a fantastic option.
Comfort and Fit
Let’s talk comfort. The Bigscreen Beyond is ridiculously light, and that alone makes it extremely comfortable to wear for extended periods. It fits snugly and comes with a magnetic 3D-printed face cushion, making it one of the most ergonomic headsets on the market.
The Pimax Crystal Light is quite the opposite. Its bulk makes it feel more like you’re strapping on a helmet, which might sound uncomfortable, but surprisingly, it’s not. With a 15mm thicker face cushion (which I highly recommend getting), the headset feels secure and well-balanced. The cushion pushes your eyes slightly farther from the lenses, reducing any sense of cross-eyed discomfort, which was an issue with the stock cushion.
The Meta Quest III falls somewhere in between. It’s light and comfortable enough for everyday use, but it doesn’t provide the same sense of premium comfort as the Beyond.
Tracking and Performance
Here’s where things get tricky. Both the Pimax Crystal Light and the Meta Quest III offer Inside-Out Tracking, meaning you don’t need external base stations for tracking. However, in my experience, the Pimax tracking wasn’t up to par. It felt stuttery, as if the frame rate was halved, which really affected the immersion. I ended up using a Lighthouse Face Plate with SteamVR base stations for tracking, and once I did that, the tracking became as fluid as the Bigscreen Beyond.
The Meta Quest III, by contrast, has seamless inside-out tracking with no need for additional hardware, making it a more user-friendly option for casual VR users or those without dedicated sim racing setups.
Sound Quality
The built-in speakers on the Pimax Crystal Light are serviceable, but they’re far from immersive. However, you can upgrade to DMAS speakers, which deliver a massive audio upgrade. In contrast, the Bigscreen Beyond doesn’t come with built-in speakers, so you’ll need to use your own audio solution, which could either be a pro or con depending on your preferences. The Meta Quest III offers solid built-in speakers that strike a balance between convenience and quality.
Final Verdict
The Pimax Crystal Light delivers exceptional visual performance and a wide FoV, making it a strong contender for serious sim racers who are willing to invest in top-tier specs. However, its bulk and subpar tracking (without additional hardware) make it less suitable for other VR activities.
The Bigscreen Beyond is a marvel of compact design and delivers outstanding clarity in a tiny package. If you already own one, there’s not much reason to upgrade to the Crystal Light unless you need the wider FoV or higher refresh rates.
As for the Meta Quest III, it’s the most versatile of the three, providing a solid VR experience with excellent optics and seamless tracking at a much more affordable price point. But when it comes to sim racing, the visuals just can’t compete with the Crystal Light or the Bigscreen Beyond.
For pure sim racing use, the Pimax Crystal Light is a great choice. The specification bump is noticeable, even if it comes with some trade-offs. But if you’re looking for something lighter or more all-round versatile, the Bigscreen Beyond and Meta Quest III are stellar alternatives.
